Ouch! That's gotta hurt?

previous | index | next

It happened here. ".. it was the second hairpin (the
left-hander) over the rocks and off-camber roots. I'd cleared the first
right-hander ok and was scrubbing off a bit of speed into the next bend,
took a high line on the outside to clear the rocks but didn't have enough
speed to clear the roots. The front wheel stalled and over I went, landing
flat on my front with my arm underneath my chest snapping it like a twig
over your knee. I managed to stagger to the bottom with my bike where,
fortunately, there was an old couple out walking who called for an
ambulance. I was taken to Chesterfield, which meant a logistical nightmare
for my parents who came from Leeds to retrieve my bike from the hospital and
my car from Chatsworth before dropping them off in Doncaster. They operated
about half six that night and I spent nearly a week under observation. I'm
now a, not so proud, owner of two metal plates and a dozen screws in my left
forearm. I can't drive for another month, ride for at least 3 months and
lift anything heavy for at least 6 months. The bike's ok though apart from a
snapped bar end and a scuffed saddle, I'll have it ready for hitting the
trails again next summer." Click here to see the fixed arm!
